No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
